Good food for a better world
Situated inside an emergency housing shelter in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, La Table du Recho brings Parisians and refugees together around a common culinary cause: “Good food for a better world.” Opened in June 2020 by the charitable organization Recho (short for “REfuge, CHaleur et Optimisme,” or “Refuge, Hospitality, and Optimism), La Table du Recho’s mission is to use cooking as a means of social integration for refugees. Alix Gerbet, one of Recho’s co-founders, sees cooking as a kind of “memory work.” “For people exiled in Europe,” he says, “having the opportunity to make and share recipes from their home countries is an immense source of comfort.” At La Table du Recho, hospitality and ecology go hand in hand. The menu is mostly plant based, with plenty of vegetarian options made from locally sourced, seasonal and organic ingredients.
